reactions to shorthand

Throughout the years, but especially in college, people would see me writing Gregg and ask: “What language is that?” I got tired of explaining, so I would just say: “English.”
Since medical school, please seem to say: “Oh, do you take shorthand?” And, again tired of the triteness of the questions, I say: “Why, yes. Don’t you?!”

  1. Haha.  I've had similar reactions.  The other day I was taking notes at work in a meeting.  My boss wanted to repeat something that he had already said, but forgot, so I said something like: yes, you said this, this, and this.  He looked at me and said: "so that really works!!!"  It was really funny.

  2. When I was at the career workshops at PCC the teacher actually recognized my shorthand note-taking and said "Aah, shorthand! I didn't think anybody still did that anymore."

It proved quite valuable, even when my knowledge of it wasn't very extensive, as I could get the information written quickly instead of spending most of the time scribing away in longhand. Phrases like "minimize the negatives" were a breeze to copy down =)

  3. "I didn't know anyone still did shorthand." (link) I get that a lot… Oh, do you take shorthand?" And, again tired of the triteness of the questions, I say: "Why, yes. Don't you?!" LOVE THAT!! lol "so that really works!!!"  It was really funny. LOL
