  1. In my senior year of college and into medical school, I needed to emphasize not and other negatives; and I faced the same problem of distinguishing between 'not' and 'in'. I also wanted some emphasis so that wouldn't overlook the word 'not' in my notes.   Some writers use a wavy line underneath shorthand outlines to indicate that those outlines should be typed in ALL CAPITALS when transcribed. I adapted this  method by placing a wavy line under any NEGATIVE that I wanted to emphasize. The shorthand outlines for 'should not be' and 'never'  would resemble the above. To emphasize a positive, I would use a double underscore; for example: 'always', 'must be' etc. Brian
