Need help in deciphering an Anniversary outline

I need help in deciphering an outline that appears in the story, “Ghosts of the Sea,” found in the March 1931 issue of The Gregg Writer.   The letters of the outline are “oog.”   This is the context in which the outline appears:
“To take on instance, the mystery of the well-known phantom of Cape Horn has recently been elucidated.  o-o-g vessels on their way from Europe to Western America via Cape Horn have been startled by the sight of a large ship with decks awash, drifting in an almost impossible position beneath giant cliffs of the straits of Lemaire.”
If anyone can help me, I shall be grateful.
