Notation in 5,000 Most Used Forms (Anniv.)

I can’t figure out what the number to the left of each word means in the Anniversary Most Used Forms book.  Anyone know what they refer to?

  1. The numbers are references to the Horn list of word frequency in English. 1 = the first thousand most frequent words, 2 = the second thousand, etc. So if you wanted to learn words in order of how frequently they used, you should concentrate on the "number 1" words first, then move on to 2, 3, 4, and 5.

I'm not sure why this isn't well explained in the booklet. At the beginning of the index (page 73 in my copy) there is a brief clarification of what the numbers mean.
