Legend of Sleepy Hollow – 1st Gregg Edition – Matches 1902 Gregg Manual

This is the first Gregg Shorthand version of Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It was published in 1912 and matches the 1902 Pre-Anniversary Gregg Shorthand manual. Gregg published two other versions of Legend of Sleepy Hollow with different Shorthand plates. The second version (circa 1924) matches the 1916 Gregg Shorthand manual with plates by Harriet M. Johnson. The third version (circa 1931) matches the 1929 Anniversary Gregg Manual with plates by Winifred Kenna Richmond.

  1. I just got several issues of the Gregg Writer for 1911 and 1912. I learned something very interesting. I found that the 1913 version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was serialized in the Gregg Writer magazine starting July 1910 and ending July 1912. The January 1913 edition of the American Shorthand Teacher magazine indicates that this first version of Sleepy Hollow was published around January 1913.

I compared the plates in the 1911/1912 Gregg Writer magazines with those in this 1913 published edition. They are identical. The serialization contained 56 parts, one for each page of the published book. Most of the installments included two parts on a single horizontal page of the magazine. A few installments had four parts on two pages of the magazine. That explains why this 1913 edition has such small plates. They had to fit two plates to a horizontal magazine page.
