Using Dot/Grid Paper to Learn Proportions?

Complete beginner to Gregg here, currently trying to teach myself Simplified from the FM Manual. A while back I remember watching an instructional video on Gregg and the person used dot paper to teach proportions. Granted, proportions come naturally over time, but would any of you recommend it? Or is it deleterious to learning? What would you say is the “best way” (if there is a best way) to help learn proportions in Gregg?

  1. No, it's not deleterious at all because it gives you a sense of the correct proportion. Just think of handwriting: you needed ruled paper to learn how to write the letters. It's the same in shorthand. Later on you can adjust your proportions once you know how to write. See also this post.
