On Skates

Figure skating is a very popular sport around the world, and part of its popularity is due to the achievements of Dick Button, two-time Olympic champion (1948, 1952) and five-time World champion (1948–1952), and the only non-European man to have become European champion. Button was the first skater to successfully land the double axel jump in competition in 1948, as well as the first triple jump of any kind – a triple loop – in 1952, and also invented the flying camel spin (originally known as the “Button camel”). He’s probably mostly known for providing color commentary and analysis to televised figure skating events, in particular during the Olympic Games. Here is an extract from his book Dick Button on Skates, in which he gives you his views on his favorite sport, transcribed in Anniversary Gregg by yours truly.
