John Gregg Discussion of Rare Gregg Books in Article on Internet Archive

Today I put a January 1922 article written by John Gregg on the Internet Archive. Gregg discussed rare Gregg Shorthand books and magazines. (The link to the article is included at the bottom of this post.)

Gregg’s article was titled “Light-Line Phonography” and “Gregg Shorthand.” Some Bibliographical Notes.

The article was written for the Willis-Byrom Club Bulletin, January 1922, Volume 3, No. 5. The Willis-Byrom Club was a group of shorthand collectors based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Gregg went into great detail about why certain Gregg Shorthand books and magazines were so rare. (Some of these rare items have been scanned and are on the Internet Archive or in other online digital collections.)

Gregg also mentioned that each US printing of Gregg’s 1893 and 1898 shorthand manual was labeled with an edition number through the 42nd edition. Each edition was actually a new print run with possible minor changes to some of the book plates.

  • Editions 1 through 6 were for printings of the 1893 shorthand manual through 1897.
  • Editions 7 through 42 were for printings of the 1898 shorthand manual from 1898 through 1902.
  • It is uncertain whether the 1902 42nd edition was the last printing of the 1898 manual, which was replaced by the 1902 Gregg Shorthand manual in July 1902.

If anyone has a U.S. copy of the 1898 manual with an Edition Number on the front, please mention the edition number, number of pages, and publication year in the comments of this post.

Here is what I have been able to determine so far from library records, scans, and hard copies:
