The following are excerpts from an address delivered on August 31, 1837 to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge by Ralph Waldo Emerson and transcribed by me it in Simplified Gregg. Phi Beta Kappa’s literary quarterly magazine, The American Scholar, was named after the speech.
