Hey did anyone notice the German Gregg on angelfishy?

Ever since visiting Switzerland last year, I have harboured some interest in the German language. I mean who wouldn’t? This country, Switzerland, its like a fairy tale. Public Transport runs on time, people are polite, and if you really want to unwind, you have the Swiss Alps. Then you have the other German speaking countries, Germany and Austria and the 1/3 of Europes population that can converse in the language.

Anyway, so the point is, I was surfing angelfishy’s website and here it is, sitting right under my nose the whole time. A german version of Gregg Shorthand. A final nail in the boat that might make me leap into this language which I have had an interest for so long.

You know supposedly 1 in 10 books are written in German and it has the second biggest internet presence behind English, and even beating out Chinese. I would like to know of any people here on the forum have experience with German, maybe even the German Gregg as listed on angelfishy:

  1. Bought a learn german book. Its funny as I'm learning new words, I'm learning their wordsigns in unison.

    der/das = d
    die = de
    gut = g
    name = n-a

    Turns out some of these are the same in german as in english. Talk about a transferrable skill!

  2. My mother lived in Germany until her 20s and shortly before she moved to the US she worked as a secretary for a power tool manufacturer (sort of the German equivalent of Black & Decker). When I told her I was learning Gregg shorthand recently, she showed me a slim booklet she learned shorthand from. It wasn't Gregg though. I'm blanking on the system's name, but it was specific to the German language. It used the contrast between heavier and lighter strokes to differentiate between letters. Pretty interesting to look at; it reminded me of the gothic typeface you'd associate with German. If I remember next time I visit her, I'll see if I can borrow the book and scan a few sample pages.

  3. I looked a bit at the German section at angelfishy this morning. Rather amazing to have that in English. It is a lovely system. I quite like the way it looks.
