Tactful in Simplified
Does anyone know why “tactful” (and by extension, “tact”) keeps the ending -t in Simplified? This seems to contradict the rule about dropping the final -t. Thanks.
The Gregg Group was founded 22 May 2004, prompted by the lack of online shorthand resources. As the primary use for shorthand — business and legal recording — has waned in recent decades, we generally acclaim the skill as a hobby or personal tool. The purpose of the group is to promote the use of Gregg systems of shorthand by providing advice to beginners, support for students, and an association of users of this efficient, attractive, and enjoyable method of writing.

Hi gang, Sorry if this is a bit long. If you don’t want to read the background about my Gregg journey and why Simplified gives me burnout, skip down to the “***” marker. As some of you may recall, I started my studies last year with Notehand and soon switched to Simplified. I felt if…
Hi all, I wrote another Notehand lesson in Simplified, for your reading enjoyment and for some constructive criticism. This one is called “Fast Shrinkage.” I wrote it from the key this time, so I wouldn’t be influenced by the Notehand plate. I also tried to keep my dictionary lookups minimal. As writing practice, this was…
Here is the outline for happiness in Simplified, with a pic from the FM manual: This bugs me, because to my eye, it seems different from most outlines. The way “-ness” is tacked on doesn’t feel right, sticking out at an angle the way it does. I would have expected a reverse curve on the first e…
I wondered about the dropping of minor vowels in Simplified (although I’m sure this applies to earlier Gregg). The word “picture” is a good example of this, being written as p-k-t-r. I’d tend to include the first vowel if I didn’t know it wasn’t used in the standard outline. There are other words I sometimes…
Here is an amusing story I “translated” from Notehand to Simplified. I wanted to share a reading piece for the Simplified readers. I’m still a new student, so pardon if I didn’t get the translation textbook perfect. I still hope it’s enjoyable reading. Surprised You are welcome to give feedback on my shorthand, but be…
Continuing along in Simplified, I was exposed to the jent blend for the first time today. By itself it seems like jent/jend isn’t too bad, but then it can also be pend/pent. And in the same lesson is the “other” stroke that can be def/dif, div/dev and — last but not least — tive/tif… wow,…
A little while ago, I had said I would share my impression of the DJS series of books. Now, my goal is not to offend any DJS fans. I am purely speaking of the physical materials themselves, NOT the DJS system of Gregg. Sitting on the library shelf, they are very cheerful as a set. A…
I wondered about the speed limitation of Notehand, and whether it is as bad as reputed to be. Although I’ve settled on Simplified for now, I still like to use the Notehand book for additional reading practice. Much better stuff than, “A girl doesn’t have to be a beauty to get ahead in business.” 🙂…
Hi, I was stuck in lesson 20 in the Simplified Manual. In the 2nd edition it is p88 #179 about a United Credit Bureau. I was going to ask for help with an outline I couldn’t decipher, last night or today. I read the sentence (second in para) as: Before the credit manager of a…
