Phrasing Rules

I recently picked up a copy of the Anniversery Gregg Phrase Book. This copy was from the Phoenix, Arizona Gregg Shorthand School; 140 South Central Ave. Glued to the inside front board is a type-written list of twenty-one supplementary phrasing rules either from the school or the student.  I thought I would post them for the…

Practice tips

Here’s an technique I use to practice. Just thought I’d pass it along.  Maybe others use it also. I use flashcards, one side has English, one side has Gregg. I spend some time looking at the Gregg and making sure I can translate it, then spend some time looking at the English and writing the…

Gregg Omitted Vowels…Please Help

I’m a DJS Gregg writer.  I’m trying very hard to learn the system well, but I don’t have a teacher, and I’m having a very hard time with one aspect of theory…and it’s driving me bananas.  When do I leave out the stupid vowels?  It’s not the blended words like “as a result” or “one…

omission of circle vowels

In working through the 5,000 most used forms (Anniversary), I came across things I don’t understand. Could someone explain to me why circle vowels are sometimes ommitted even when they occur in accented syllables? Examples:pen – no “e”pig – no “i”pity – no “i”bid – no “i”beauty – no “eau” but:pan, pin, peg, pick, pit,…

Any left-handers out there?

As you can guess by my name, I’m a leftie.  I find writing Gregg shorthand to be particularly challenging. I need to turn my paper almost completely sideways (counter-clockwise) in order to get the right slant and flow, and even then my m’s and n’s aren’t straight lines because I’m pushing the pen up the page instead…

H-dot first or last?

Just a little question. Is the H-dot written before or after a word is written? and is the H-dot, like the vowel indicaters, left out? thanks for the help. -Strawman- (by -strawman- for everyone)

Test your shorthand vocabulary and speed

I found the following letter in a Gregg Writer, and it’s full of words that can cause some difficulty. I decided to post it so that you can test yourself. Have fun! —————————My dear Sir: Your query concerning the late football games brings up a question that is with us every fall. As a matter…

Writing between the lines

I just obtained the Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified Second Edition. I started the first chapter. I have a couple of questions: what rule of paper should I use? should I keep the outlines between the lines? and I should I focus the center of the outline somewhere (ex. in longhand, words are focused on the bottom…

Ommision of Vowels

I was wondering why some words omit the vowels, even when they are stressed. For example, the word “incline” is written “e n”. The disjoined e only makes the incl sound, so why is there no simple for the hard ‘i’ sound? I’d think you’d write it “e i-n”. Same thing wish the “sup(e)r-” prefix….
