In Praise of Paper & Pen
The BBC has a nice article about paper and pens. It doesn’t mention shorthand, but it talks about bullet journaling, note-taking, mapping goals, etc. Why paper is the real ‘killer app’
The Gregg Group was founded 22 May 2004, prompted by the lack of online shorthand resources. As the primary use for shorthand — business and legal recording — has waned in recent decades, we generally acclaim the skill as a hobby or personal tool. The purpose of the group is to promote the use of Gregg systems of shorthand by providing advice to beginners, support for students, and an association of users of this efficient, attractive, and enjoyable method of writing.

I thought I’d briefly share a fun gadget that can be used for shorthand note-taking. It’s the Boogie Board 9.7 Sync eWriter. You can think of it as a paperless digital notebook. Its screen and stylus were designed to have more of the feel of pen and paper, so it’s less slippery than writing on…
This booklet is available on Ebay . . . intriguing title. And I can’t even speculate about what the answer might be, despite the name of the publisher . . .
I recently stumbled across an interesting documentary on Amazon Prime called The Voynich Code: The World’s Most Mysterious Manuscript. No one has been able to crack its code — is it shorthand? Encrypted text? Gibberish? Even the illustrations are other-worldly. Some wonder if the author was the young Leonardo DaVinci, but no one really knows…
I received a request for assistance in the transcription of some shorthand notes from a diary of a British WWI soldier. Mr. William Pritchett fought in France during WWI and ended up a prisoner of war in Germany. He kept a diary: most of it is in plain English, but some parts are written in…
I just finished reading a biography about George D. Watt, who was a Pitman scribe to the Mormon prophet, Brigham Young, for 30 years during the mid 1800’s. The biography is available in print as well as in .pdf format for free on the University of Utah website here. It was fascinating– how often do…
Found these receipts in a used shorthand book I bought in recent years. Thought you might find them interesting!
If you’ve read any biographical information about Dr. Gregg, you’ll know that when he was quite young he had a legal dispute with Thomas Malone, another shorthand inventor/teacher who had authored “Script Phonography”. Dr. Gregg worked as a teacher for Malone, and when Gregg created his own system Malone took him to court over the…
I just found this book in Amazon and eBay. Mr. Tursi is President of the NY State Court Reporter’s Association, and founder, director, and instructor at the Verbatim School of Court Reporting in Long Island, NY. He wrote this book in 2015. It has chapters on Mr. Pitman, Dr. Gregg, Mr. Dupraw, and Mr. Swem,…
