Chuckle

As you all know since December 2004, I’ve been teaching myself  (DJS) shorthand. Well, here’s what happened to me today. I decided to head to the library to reserve a book but before I left my home, on a piece of scrap paper I wrote  in shorthand the title of the book  “How  (the word “how” was…

What/of it…

Can I join the brief forms ‘of’ and ‘it’ (o t)? Or is it best not to, in order to avoid confusion with the brief form of ‘what’ (o t)? Kevin (by kevinwal for everyone)

O hook

Hi fellows! I’m working on improving my speed, almost 105 wpm in Spanish, counting word by word… I’m using the exercise called “Gamas taquigráficas”, and in the text I am writing says:  “Dando origen primero al trueque…” Well “Dando” is written with a d sign and a dot at the end which is the gerund…

Anniversary Gregg shorthand in Spanish

Hi fellows! Does anyone know where I can buy an Anniversary Gregg shorthand book in Spanish? Because, I have finished Simplified (always in Spanish), but I am using Anniversary brief forms, and I think, that’s not good. I own an Anniversary Gregg shorthand dictionary in Spanish, so I can pick some words, but some principles…

Regional variations in pronunciation

I’ve been thinking recently about whether I should adapt outlines to the way I actually pronounce words rather than the way the Simplified manual indicates. I’ve already done it with ‘schedule’, which Brits pronounce ‘shedule’ rather than ‘skedule’. Now I’m wondering about the oo hook. In Lesson 22 of the Simplified manual, it says the hook…

First Edition reprint . . .

Hey, all. I just acquired a very interesting little reprint of the 1888 edition of Gregg’s booklet–the original publication from Liverpool.  Apparently McGraw-Hill reprinted these in 1971 and distributed them to shorthand teachers–I also got a copy of the letter that accompanied the reprint from George S. Deeg, III, “Shorthand Project Manager” at McGraw-Hill.  It’s a…

Rapid Dictation

Hi folks, I want to know whether anyone else experiences this problem and you’re the perfect group to ask! As the dictation gets faster than my capabilities or as I fall behind the dictation, I’ve noted that my right-hand margin gets bigger and that my shorthand outlines get sloppier. The “sloppier” part I understand fully,…

Annv. Omission of T question

Unit 22 says the T is omitted at the end of a word.  And after the S. So COST does not have the T However, it says T is written in the following words. And COAST has the T. Why? Is it just a variation, the vowel sounds or sounds in general, to know the…

Just H-e-l-o

I thought I would introduce myself.  I’ve joined a month or so ago (maybe more?) and have been reading the messages.  I use Gregg shorthand at work almost everyday.  I love it and am amazed that I rarely find another person who knows shorthand.  I learned it in high school from 1980-1982.  I do believe…

New book!

Gregg Speed Practice (1961) has just arrived in the post. I found it on Abe Books, and thought it was worth the £10 (that’s about $19) they were asking for it.  It looks great – though the cover is a rather bilious green colour 🙂 I’ll finish the Simplified manual first, of course, but it’s nice to…
