The novel Smoky the Cowhorse by French-Canadian writer and artist Will James won the Newbery Medal in 1927, which is awarded in recognition of a distinguished contribution to American literature for children. I wrote a small excerpt in Centennial Gregg for the blog.

I was having a bit of trouble reading this, until I realized he's speaking "cowboy talk."
I do have a question on page 2, column 2 down towards the bottom. It says," green grass-covered ridges took the place of snow banks and the _____ along creeks was beginning to bud."
What is that word?
Back again. Is it "cottonwoods?"
Yes!
Lots of "cowboy talk" in this story, indeed!
Thanks for this. It's strange seeing the e in then, but readable once I got used to it. Again, good practice in non-standard English.
