The Gregg Group was founded 22 May 2004, prompted by the lack of online shorthand resources. As the primary use for shorthand — business and legal recording — has waned in recent decades, we generally acclaim the skill as a hobby or personal tool. The purpose of the group is to promote the use of Gregg systems of shorthand by providing advice to beginners, support for students, and an association of users of this efficient, attractive, and enjoyable method of writing.

Here are some PDFs of old New York Times articles that mention Charles Lee Swem and Salome Lanning Tarr. Aug. 3, 1912 – Girl Typist’s Speed Surprises Wilson; Salome Tarr Takes His 6,000-Word Speech at the Rate of 150 Words a Minute. (And she was just 19.) Aug. 25, 1912 – Is Speed Stenography a…
Here’s a short film about the “Ediphone” and how it helps out the poor, harried shorthand writer. Though many of us might question whether it proved to be “the stenographer’s friend” in the long run! This booklet is a companion to the 1916 edition of the Gregg Shorthand manual, and it is correlated with the lessons. It can also be used for Anniversary practice. In addition to the practice material, it contains charts of the alphabet and brief forms, and a review word list. I have also attached the key…
Does anyone know what the the 3rd to the last line reads on page 72? It starts as a letter, I believe. “Mr. Lloyd Niles ….” something something. All capitalized. (by Michael for group greggshorthand)
Andrew Owen’s site of course already covers the Reading and Dictation Practice drills, so the only thing useful here is the Writing Practice drills. If anyone is surprised to find a two-page key to the Most-Used Phrases Chart, that’s because later editions of the Manual evidently left out the 2nd page. Andrew has both pages…
Maybe I’m reading this wrong… I can’t decipher the penultimate word on the fourth line of page 120 in “Gregg Speed Studies 3rd ed.” Can anyone help me? (by Michael for group greggshorthand)
