Brain tricks

I read with interest the various tips about speed building and think they’re very worthwhile, especially the use of Gregg Reporting Shortcuts, a favorite of mine. I also agree that Gregg is written with the brain more than the hand, and in that line of thinking, I have a practice that seems to help increase…

Nifty device on ebay for machine steno

I never thought about it before, but the tapes from pre-computer steno machines are probably hard to hold down while transcribing. This is a holder for the tapes. It looks like the tape is about 2 inches wide, fan-folded in 8 inch sections. Really, really rough guesses as to the measurement. http://cgi.ebay.ca/GREEN-Steno-Note-Stand-Stenograph-Note-Court-Reporting_W0QQitemZ330213726387QQihZ014QQcategoryZ62044QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (by cricketbeautiful-1 for…

Study Advice

I’m about half-way through anni, and starting up again after a break. I was able to push passages up to 50wpm before the break. I was spending way too long on each chapter, writing everything, including the Fundamental Drills, twice. Possibly useful, but not very satisfying. At this stage: Is it better to write more…

Centennial

Does anyone know who wrote the shorthand in the Centennial books?  Generally speaking, it’s pretty well done, although the lines are not as crisp and defined as in earlier Gregg publications.  In the two books I have, Charles Zoubek is the only author, and no credit is given for the shorthand.  As a DJS writer,…

South-Western Publishing DJS book

I just got a copy of “Shorthand Transcription Studies, Fourth Edition (Jubilee)”, published by South-Western in 1968.  The authors are Balsey and Wanous. This series, using Gregg shorthand, is a real anomaly.  I didn’t know it continued through to DJS. The shorthand plates were written by Grace Bowman, and oh my . . . what…

Since Series 90: how our lives have changed

I just browsed through the Series 90 college version of the “speed building” text, published in 1979.  At that time our state university (the University of Missouri) still offered shorthand classes (hard to believe!) and I remember buying the set of books new in the university bookstore. Two things are striking about the photos in…

Cheers! (by cricketbeautiful-1 for everyone)

Series 90

Michael and Alex: Series 90 version has an Expert textbook that is quite good, and probably easier to obtain than the older versions.  GREGG EXPERT SPEEDBUILDING, SERIES 90, Zoubek, ISBN#:  0-07-073077-6, 1985 is the last printing. –Joe (by mountainmaningerogia for everyone)

Reporting shortcuts

Alex, thanks.  I didn’t think to include in my note whehter a PDF was available on this.  As you say, none available that I know of.   Next best thing is GREGG EXPERT SPEEDBUILDING, any edition, but make sure it’s the EXPERT text of any of the Gregg versions.  (by mountainmaningerogia for everyone)
